Surface Pattern Design:
Freelance Design Service
Hello I’m Carol McEwan, a freelance designer with over 25 years experience in the fashion industry. I can supply fashion prints and patterns, all created and supplied as full repeat designs, made in either Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop and therefore easily re-coloured and re-sized.

This is just a small example below of the numerous print designs and services which the Wee Design Studio can offer.
Mens, Ladies, Girls, Boys & Babies Print Designs are possible.
Fashion Prints
This leopard & floral print design was designed for a fashion boutique in Scotland.
Colours, blocks and patterns were researched and developed to suit their customer base and a successful sample range was developed with a small Indian factory specialising in digital prints onto crepe fabrics, perfect for the UK fashion market.
Colours can be matched to specific customer palettes, or industry standard Pantone references.
AOP - mens
I’ve worked with suppliers in India & Bangladesh to produce shirts for some well known menswear brands in the UK.
The painted marks were manipulated in photoshop so that the final design is a one colour print repeat which is cheap to produce however by using artistic effects like this, it gives the shirt a more expensive, hand-crafted appearance.
Painted Effects
Quite often I will create the original artwork ‘offline’ by drawing or painting components such as leaves and then scanning them into Photoshop where I can manipulate shapes and colours to create a pattern repeat.
This blue print was designed to be a one colour repeat print onto chambray fabric (for mens shirts).
Support for Design Teams
As a freelance fashion designer, I often work with design teams that are just too busy with work or don’t have the time to spend a whole day on a placement print or AOP design.
My experience of working closely with factories helps me design prints to suit different fabrics or printing techniques.
I’m used to working with mood boards or inspiration from buyers and turning them into commercial prints for all different markets.
Rotary Print Design
This leopard print design was originally created in Adobe Photoshop, consisting of millions of colours.
It was then converted into a limited palette of 4-5 colours which are then separated into individual layers, suitable for rotary printing on a high, commercial scale.
Checks & Tartan
Check designs can be either yarn dyed or printed.
As you can see here, even if it’s printed, it will give the appearance of a ‘real’ woven check due to how I colour it up, ensuring correct crossover of the warp & weft threads.
Since this is a vector based design it is easily re-coloured to show additional colourways.
Childrenswear AOP & Graphics
I also enjoy working on kidswear, especially graphics and prints. Previously my boyswear designs were some of the best selling items in JJB sports, outselling Nike.
This is a small range I designed for Sports Direct, under the SoulCal brand where fabric choices were just as important as the print designs. We worked to a tight budget to make the range affordable without looking cheap.
